About Us

Protecting Tampa Bay’s Marine Ecosystem, One Scholar at a Time

Seagrass Scholars is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering environmental stewardship through education, community engagement, and hands-on conservation efforts in the Tampa Bay area. Our mission is to inspire future generations to protect and restore marine ecosystems, with a special focus on seagrass habitats—vital to water quality, marine life, and coastal resilience.

Through interactive programs, educational workshops, and collaborative initiatives, we empower students, educators, and local communities to become advocates for ocean health. By connecting science with real-world action, Seagrass Scholars cultivates a deeper understanding of our coastal environment and the role we all play in its preservation.

Join us as we work together to protect and sustain Tampa Bay’s marine ecosystems for future generations!

Why Seagrass?

Seagrass meadows are one of the most overlooked yet essential ecosystems on our planet. They clean our waters, stabilize shorelines, shelter marine life, and store carbon more efficiently than rainforests. But they’re disappearing at an alarming rate.

Education is our first line of defense.

How We Make Waves

At Seagrass Scholars, we create meaningful, immersive learning experiences that bring science and conservation to life.

We offer:

  • Coastal science curriculum for schools and homeschoolers

  •  Experiential learning through outdoor workshops and field days

  • Custom programming for educators, caregivers, and youth groups

  • Community outreach events and conservation awareness projects

Our programs are designed to be inclusive, joyful, and deeply rooted in environmental connection.

From Passion to Purpose

Seagrass Scholars was born during a deeply reflective season in my life — one where I returned to what I love most: storytelling, nature, and education.

Though I grew up far from the coast, the ocean has always called to me. And now, I want to create a way for young people — especially those with limited access to the water — to answer that call, too.

This is more than a program. It’s a movement to protect what grows quietly beneath the surface.

Our Mission

At Seagrass Scholars, our mission is to educate and empower communities to protect and restore Tampa Bay’s marine ecosystems, with a special focus on seagrass conservation. Seagrass meadows are essential for marine biodiversity, providing habitat for species like manatees while improving water quality and storing carbon. Through hands-on learning, scientific exploration, and community engagement, we inspire future environmental stewards to take action. By bridging science and public awareness, we aim to create lasting change that ensures the health and sustainability of our coastal waters for generations to come.

Why Seagrass Matters

Seagrass meadows are the foundation of a healthy marine ecosystem, providing vital habitat for a wide range of marine species, including the beloved manatee. These gentle creatures rely on seagrass beds as their primary food source. In addition, seagrass improves water quality and helps combat climate change by storing carbon. Despite their critical role, seagrass ecosystems are under threat from pollution, boat damage, and habitat loss. Through education and action, Seagrass Scholars is dedicated to protecting these underwater forests to ensure a thriving future for manatees and all marine life.
